Are there places in the world that you have always wanted to see? People of all ages now travel far more extensively than ever before and most find it an enriching and exciting experience.

I love to travel because there is so much to seen: extraordinary landscapes, ancient ruins, cities and towns steeped in history, fascinating cultures and modern marvels. Choose to sail through the Panama Canal or the fjords of Norway. Explore the ruins of Pompeii, the Parthenon in Athens or the Neolithic monument of Stonehenge in Britain. Visit the Vatican City in the heart of Rome, swim in the warm waters of Fiji or attend a concert at the Sydney Opera House.

Travel also gives you the chance to see how everything operates in another country. I have been surprised to find some excellent transport systems, wonderful public spaces, delicious food and interesting philosophies that gave me fresh ideas and a new perspective on life.

Travel is a modern benefit

Hundreds of years ago, our ancestors rarely ventured further than their own town or the nearby villages. Only wealthy people or sailors would travel overseas, and they would return with amazing stories.

Now many people are able to travel, and an increasing number of us have visited a wide range of destinations. Cruise ships are sailing to the four corners of the Earth and planes are taking off every few seconds from our major airports. We really are very lucky to have so many options.

Try to take any opportunities that you have to see other parts of the world and also your own country. Think of the enjoyment to be had in experiencing for yourself the scenery, architecture, history and culture of another land.

Travel before time runs out

My opinion is that we should all make the most of the one life that we are given. You never know what may be just around the corner, perhaps an accident or health problem that could curtail your plans for the future. Days turn into weeks and months so quickly, and soon another year has come to an end. If you are longing to travel and have the means to do so, then consider including that as one of your goals and take steps to make it a reality.

I am not advising that you quit your job, leave your family, borrow money, give up your studies or otherwise act irresponsibly and unwisely. All I am saying is that if the time is right, then consider making a start and not leaving it for another two years or five years into the future.

Jump on that train of life and take your journey before it derails.
