My Review

5 stars – An engrossing collection of short stories

This fascinating and well-written short story collection drew me in from the moment I started reading. I’m familiar with this author’s previous titles so I had high expectations, and this proved to be one of her best. The title of the book describes it perfectly, as the author has crafted short stories with the common theme of death. Some are paranormal, some are mysteries, and many are based on real events from the past.  Most of them have a surprising or tragic twist, and I was enthralled by the wide variety of subjects.

The topics varied from Inca children about to be sacrificed, a munitions factory in World War One, factory girls working with radium in 1922, a woman on her wedding day who finds a deadly trap door, and a horrifying contest in a dystopian world. I felt drawn deeply into the time and place of each story and at times I was hoping for a happy ending, only to have my hopes dashed. I became engrossed, turning the pages right to the end. Sometimes spine-tingling, sometimes chilling and at times pure horror, the stories were a timely reminder that death awaits us all. Despite the dark subject matter, the stories were written with deep compassion and empathy.

The author clearly has a strong creative spirit, drawing ideas from so many subjects. I was fascinated to read, at the end of each story, an explanation of the source of her inspiration. As an added bonus, I certainly learned some historical facts and improved my general knowledge.

This was a fabulous read, and I give it a resounding five stars.

A fantastic review, Toni. I agree with you that this is some of Robbie’s best work. My favorite heartbreaking story was the Radium Girls. I love how she fleshes out real historical events to write about. Thank you for sharing and congratulations to Robbie!

Hi Diana, thank you for your lovely comment. I like writing short dark stories and I am working on another collection based on South African history. It’s not as big a project to write short stories as you get a mini success as you finish each one.
